The Trainer
Ross Mackay - Is He Worth Listening To?
There is no shortage of people who are willing and eager to take your money to tell you how to look after your pumps. Unfortunately, a lot of them have limited credentials and even less of a track record. So, before going any further, you have to decide whether I am one of them, or whether I might actually be able to deliver. Consequently, (and with no intention of merely bragging) it would make sense for you to know a few things about me
Over 40 years ago, I started in the pump business as a craft apprentice on the shop floor and in field service work. In other words, I learned the harsh realities of working with pumps from the ground up. Including the ones that are red hot - leaking acids - in cramped quarters - and outdoors in mid-winter.
I also graduated from Stow College of Engineering in Glasgow, Scotland, so theoretical and design criteria hold few mysteries for me.
I have serviced pumps in a wide variety of industrial plants and mills in Europe, Scandinavia and Asia, and led trouble-shooting teams all across North America. From this I learned that every plant has similar pump problems and for very similar reasons. (Different languages, different accents, same problems)
I have worked with some of the leading suppliers to the industry; Weir, BW/IP, Sulzer and Chesterton. This has given me a view from both sides of the supply fence, so I can tell you the best way to get the most out of your suppliers..... and the things they do not always tell their customers.
I have also had the privilege of working with some of the best pump people in the world. Some of them had extensive practical experience, while others had a string of degrees after their name. But they all have one thing in common. They know pumps! With their help I
have figured out why everyone seems to have the same repetitive problems and...
more importantly... how to fix them.
During the last 20 years, I have published dozens of papers on pumping problems in just about all the principle industry magazines and have been a guest speaker at Industry Conferences throughout North America and Europe.
For 4 years, Elsevier Science, the leading international publisher of technical books pursued me to write the most complete book on the care and nurture of pumps, resulting in "The Practical Pumping Handbook" which is now available from this website.
That is why I know that you CAN stop repetitive pump failure.
